How to navigate ‘digital dating’ during the lockdown
Dating and hook-up service Grindr has announced its intention to remove the “ethnicity filter” from its popular app. The controversial function allowed paying users to filter out prospective partners based on ethnicity labels such as “Asian”, “Black” and “Latino”. Long criticised as racist, the filter also helped to create a culture where users were emboldened to express their racism. Alongside other dating apps, Grindr has a reputation for sexual racism — the exclusion of potential partners based on race. In Grindr tried to amend this perception with the “Kindr Grindr” initiative. This move banned the use of exclusionary language such as “No Asians” and “No Blacks” in user bios, and attempted to explain to users why these statements are harmful and unacceptable.

Despite online dating rapidly becoming big business in New Zealand, Kirk said his research found that for some reason women in Wairarapa were dragging their feet online with only about represented on dating sites.
Kirk did admit that some of his internet dates came from Wairarapa but wouldn’t be drawn on what they were like, how many, and whether any became a more permanent fixture. He said because Wairarapa had a “low density” of people compared to Wellington or Manawatu, women here were not used to “differentiating” unlike those in the cities. They were finding that internet dating solved some of the problems of the traditional scene, where it was better than trying to meet men at pubs where you couldn’t hear what was being said because of the noise of the live band.
If you’re anything like me lately, you’ll find you have become a little “meh” when it comes to dating apps. They’ve lost their spark and the same lowly creatures myself included will keep popping up on your app. Just the other day I matched with a bloke who told me we went on a date about two years ago. Oh for shame, I couldn’t even remember. You will come across the same ol’ faces and think, “Geez, they’re still looking? Why haven’t they partnered up yet? Hang on a sec, why haven’t I??
Now having been around the traps a few times, I can tell you that most people on the dating apps, i. Here are just some of the ones I have collated from my own experience …. He’s not.

Isolation has been tough on single people around the globe — but after hearing this attempt at dating during quarantine, you might not feel so bad. Relationship columnist Jana Hocking told news. But I got there and he was the tiniest little nerd I ever met. It took five seconds and I knew, no. Hocking said the lockdown restrictions meant she had to embark on virtual dates with people she matched with on dating apps — which meant she could quickly weed out the ones she wasn’t interested in without wasting entire nights on dates that didn’t have a future.
After hitting it off over the phone with one match, they moved to video calls.

Think it’s hard for women to find love online? It’s far worse for men – just read their toe-curling tales about the dates from hell Brian Fletcher, 70, is a retired restaurant owner from Taunton, Somerset. Divorced with a grown-up son and daughter, he’s been single for 15 years. I would prefer to be in a wonderful relationship, I truly would. But my first date, after the end of 31 years of marriage, rather set the tone.
The lady invited me to her home and, pulling into the driveway, I was pleasantly surprised – it was a mansion. But while she was the lady of the manor, she wasn’t the lady of my dreams. She greeted me with a cigarette in one hand, mop in the other, no make-up, birds’ nest hair and wearing an old brown T-shirt and trousers.
After a few minutes of small talk, I made an excuse and left. You get the impression that some women think men like me are so desperate that they don’t have to take any care over their appearance when you meet. The difference between women’s pictures or what they say they look like and the reality has often been truly astonishing. One woman who’d refused to send me a photo was so big she had double bingo wings.
She wore Crocs shoes and tatty old leggings that showed every bulge and bump.

We’ve seen the TV documentaries featuring assorted oddballs telling their tales of woe or joy, we’ve been told again and again how dangerous it is out there, and so many of us have shunted net dating into the “too weird” basket. Yet dating sites keep growing. January web stats from Hitwise show that the top two local sites, NZ Dating and Findsomeone were 3rd and 9th respectively in a ranking of Kiwi sites’ market share, with both having gained popularity since the month before. Has there been a geek population explosion, or is net dating going mainstream?
It was my sad, desperate mission to find out. Many of them didn’t need much convincing – there is a lot of anger out there over a television documentary on the subject a while back. Apparently the show’s participants were a rather strange and sad lot and the web dating community is still smarting over it. No wonder. It quickly becomes clear that net Datingland does not necessarily equate with Geeksville or Pervert County.
There’s a lot of sleaze out there. That we know already. But there are also a lot of normal people.

Someone Is Using Dan Vettori’s Face To Score On ‘Soulmates’ Online Dating Ad
Forget online dating apps, a Kiwi bloke has resorted to an old-school newspaper ad in his quirky quest to reconnect with a woman who captivated him at an air show. On Friday Richard attended the Wings Over Wairarapa airshow but instead of his attention focused on the action in the air, his eyes were drawn to an appealing, long red-haired woman he struck up a conversation with. After meeting Wendy and making a connection, his mystery woman soon disappeared into the night. Despite having a golden ticket to Saturday’s show, Richard’s effort to find Wendy failed.
But in a bid to reunite with Wendy, Richard decided to post an ad in a Wellington newspaper in the hope she’d come forward. I would really like to meet you again – coffee perhaps?

Will you meet me in an hour for no-strings-attached sex? I’ve just hit “send”, and my bold message is now on its way to Chris, a year-old guy whose profile says he’s a tradie, looking to meet someone adventurous. I’ve been swiping right for the last three hours, in the interest of carrying out a little social experiment. The objective is simple: proposition a hundred men for sex, and tally up their responses.
The practice is decidedly more tedious. Tinder maxes me out of matches for the day after I reach 20 guys, so I download Bumble — another app well known for facilitating sexual hook-ups. This time I get creative and craft individual thirsty messages. It’s almost too easy. All the years of exposure to creeps in my DMs has armed me with an encyclopaedic knowledge of sleazy pick-up lines. What’s not baffling, is the fact around 57 per cent of women experience sexual harassment via dating apps.
It’s perhaps due to the fact there’s a kind of ego bolstering that goes with knowing another potential suitor is a mere right-swipe away. For most women, having infinite options at your fingertips doesn’t translate to increased sexual assertiveness.
